A Philly cheesesteak is perfect for Super Bowl Sunday! Here’s a classic and delicious recipe to make authentic cheesesteaks at home.

Philly cheesesteaks

Ingredients (Serves 4):

  • 1 lb ribeye steak (or skirt steak), thinly sliced

  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional)

  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)

  • 4 hoagie rolls

  • 8 slices provolone cheese (or Cheez Whiz or American cheese)

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Instructions:

  1. Prep the Steak:

    • Freeze the steak for about 30 minutes to make slicing easier. Then, slice it as thinly as possible against the grain.

  2. Cook the Veggies:

    • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

    • Add onions (plus bell peppers and mushrooms if using). Sauté until soft and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from pan.

  3. Cook the Steak:

    • In the same skillet, add a little more oil if needed.

    • Cook the thinly sliced steak over high heat, seasoning with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

    • Use a spatula to break it up as it cooks (like ground beef). Cook for 3-4 minutes until browned.

  4. Melt the Cheese:

    • Lower the heat and return the veggies to the pan.

    • Lay the cheese slices on top of the steak and let them melt (or mix in Cheez Whiz).

  5. Toast the Rolls:

    • Spread butter on the hoagie rolls and toast them in a pan or oven until golden.

  6. Assemble:

    • Scoop the cheesy steak and veggies into the toasted rolls.

  7. Serve & Enjoy:

    • Serve hot with fries, chips, or a side of pickles.
